Winter sowing is a simple, low-cost way to start seeds outdoors using recycled one-gallon jugs.

Instead of grow lights and trays indoors,  let the cold, snow, and early spring sunshine do the work outside! The result is sturdy, weather-ready seedlings that sprout at the right time and don’t need hardening off before being transplanted into the garden.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn winter sowing techniques - preparation of the container, soil selection, and seeding. Each participant will create and take home 2 planted jugs, ready to set outside - the beginning of your own winter-sown garden!

Instructor Kaija Sarcastically grew up in a home where flowers were part of everyday life. Her grandmother and parents before her tended the East Side garden with care. Today, Kaija and her husband, Lance, live in that same East Side home, continuing the family tradition. Little by little, they’ve replaced lawn with raised beds, filling every sunny corner with old family roses, long-loved perennials, and new herbs, vegetables, and annuals which they start each winter by seed outdoor with these same winter sowing techniques.
